Paleokastro beach is a beautiful small pebble beach, which is about 8 km from our hotel. The waters are usually calm and clean, mainly because of the eastern orientation of the bay, which protects the beach from the strong winds.

The place is perfect for snorkeling, so you might want to keep a sea mask with you and explore the “mysterious” seabed.

On the east side of the beach, at the top of a big rock, there are parts of walls which once surrounded the Venetian fortress of Paleokastro. Paleokastro along with the fortress of Koules protected the coast of the city of Heraklion during the Venetian domination in Crete.

The beach is organized, with some sunbeds, showers and changing rooms, while in a short distance you can find several taverns which mainly serve seafood.
